Gentian Violet is not a new invention. It belongs to a group of synthetic organic compounds known as aniline dyes and was first synthesized in the late 1800s. Its striking, deep purple color quickly led to its application far beyond textile dyeing.

Early Medical Applications

The compound was first prepared in 1861 by a German chemist named Heinrich Caro. Initially, it was part of a major boom in synthetic dyes created from coal tar derivatives.

However, its medical importance was truly established in the 1880s when Dr. Christian Gram used a related violet dye to develop the Gram Stain- a technique still critical today for classifying bacteria under a microscope. This discovery proved the dye's ability to selectively interact with microorganisms.

By the early 20th century, Gentian Violet was widely adopted in human and veterinary medicine due to its powerful anti-fungal and mild antiseptic properties. It was routinely used as an affordable, topical treatment for conditions like impetigo, candida, and minor infections, especially in resource limited settings. Its persistence and deep color were viewed as advantages, confirming the treatment area was protected.

Why The Piercing Industry Uses It

The widespread adoption of Gentian Violet in piercing studios was driven by a single, crucial need: making accuracy marking especially on melanated skin tones.

Traditional surgical skin markers often contain dyes (like Pyoktanin Blue) that can be difficult or impossible to see on melanated skin especially on darker skin tones. (To solve this solution, Stiletto launched a white skin marker that is pigmented enough to appear on lighter skin tones as well.)

Gentian Violet, with its intense, deep purple hue, provides a high contrast mark that:

• IARC Classification: the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), part of the World Health Organization, has classified Gentian Violet ad Group 2B: Possibly Carcinogenic to Humans. This classification is based on sufficient evidence of carcinogenicity in animal studies, though human evidence is limited.
• Toxicology Studies: Much of the evidence comes from studies, particularly in rodents, where high dose expose (often through oral administration) was linked to liver tumors and other adverse effects. While the exposure via skin marking is minimal, these precautionary findings drove regulatory action in many markets.
• EU and Canada: The European Medicines Agency and Health Canada reviewed these toxicology data and determined that the risk associated with its use, particularly in pharmaceutical applications (application to open wounds or mucous membranes), warranted its classification as a restricted or banned substance.
