The widespread adoption of Gentian Violet in piercing studios was driven by a single, crucial need: making accuracy marking especially on melanated skin tones.
Traditional surgical skin markers often contain dyes (like Pyoktanin Blue) that can be difficult or impossible to see on melanated skin especially on darker skin tones. (To solve this solution, Stiletto launched a white skin marker that is pigmented enough to appear on lighter skin tones as well.)
Gentian Violet, with its intense, deep purple hue, provides a high contrast mark that:
1. Allows the piercer to accurately confirm the placement with the client, reducing the risk of error, particularly with complex or symmetry dependent piercings.
2. Unlike other markers that can be quickly wiped away by skin prep solutions (like alcohol or chlorhexidine), Gentian Violet adheres firmly, remaining visible throughout the entire procedure. For many professionals, it remains the gold standard solution for high visibility marking.
