Skin Marking

Skin marking is arguably the most crucial step in the entire piercing process. It is the moment where we translate a client's anatomy into a technical plan. While it might look like just a few dots/lines on the skin, those marks represent the balance between aesthetics and long term healing. If the placement is off by even a fraction of a millimeter, it can lead to migration, irritation, or a look that just feels "wrong" to the eye.

A Quick Look Back

The History of marking is rooted in surgical precision. Long before specialized tools existed, piercers borrowed techniques from medicine, using things like gentian violet and basic surgical pens. In the early days of the modern piercing movement, many artists relied solely on their "eye" to determine placements.

As the industry evolved, we realized that human error and the natural curves of the body make freehand marking incredibly difficult. The majority moved from toothpicks dipped in ink to sophisticated skin markers, always searching for a way to ensure that septril or a pair of high nostrils for example, looked perfectly symmetrical from every angle.

Good marking isn't just about where the needle goes in. Its about:
